an autumn sunset wedding
I’m not even sure where to begin when talking about Johnathan and Deanna’s amazing October wedding. I still feel giddy that I got to create some of my best work for these two sweethearts. Their day was beautifully infused with their personalities and I could just gush about how awesome it was for hours!
Shifting from Spring-time Vibes: Mixing Local Blooms & Warm Tropicals
Unless you’re a florist or avid gardener, you’re probably not picking your wedding date based on what florals you’re wanting. This is pretty common so I wasn’t surprised when Johnathan and Deanna first reached out to me and they were in love with delicate spring florals like tulips, sweet peas, and poppies. Although florist have the ability to import flowers like these not in spring, they just don’t hold up to the quality of in-season, local blooms. So the question I started asking myself was, how do I get them this soft spring feel in October?
What ended up really inspiring me was Jonathan and Deanna wanted sunset colors with a hints of lavender and red. Visions of peachy-orange and periwinkle sunsets flooded my brain! This was actually around the same time I found out that Deanna was a graphic designer and Jonathan a DJ. I knew such cool creative people needed some funky flair too. Anthuriums, orchids and cobra lilies were the move!
I spent a long time curating a color palette and ingredient list that blended the soft pastels of spring with the vibrant tropicals and lush fall foliage. Even then, things came together better than we could have imagined. Locally grown foxglove and phlox were shining stars in Deanna’s bouquet. My team and I incorporated rain pods into the ground arch as a reflection of the tree above the gazebo. The cobra lilies from Fox Leaf Farm blended seamlessly with tabaco blooms and garden roses.
Minimal Ingredient Bouquets
Okay I wanted to take a hot second to talk about Deann’s stunning bridesmaid bouquets. In the name of super transparency, these were not what we had planned! Deanna was in love with the single-ingredient, cala lily look for her bridesmaid. Cala Lilies popularity had been spiking lately because of some bridal editorials that are very fun! The challenge is cala lilies are much more delicate than most people think. And when the large ones are in season and the hardiest? January.
Even though Deanna and I planned to mix pastel pink calas with white and a few extra large ones, the bouquets were not holding together! The lilies were just too flimsy! Thankfully, I remembered Deanna also loved oncidium orchids. These dainty yellow blooms fit perfectly with the planned palette for the bridesmaid dresses.
Single ingredient and double ingredient bouquets (and centerpieces even) are definitely trending right now. I personally love them because they highlight shape and texture and just feel extra intentional for you wedding party and guests. The oncidium helped support the cala lilies and ended up reflecting the fullness of the ceremony design!
Fellow Creatives: How Jonathan & Deanna used their Talents to make their day Extra Special
I casually mentioned earlier that Deanna and Jonathan have some pretty cool jobs! They moved to San Diego to further their creative pursuits and of course utilized their talents to make their wedding an absolute hit.
Deanna recently embarked full time on her illustrative business Days Full Of. I happened upon her professional account because she did some beautiful graphics for a mutual!
Of course she designed a custom font for all the invitations and signage at their wedding! I could not stop telling people this because of how perfect it was. Beautiful custom signage is a quiet art in weddings and for it to tie everything together so wonderfully was extra special.
I also just have to say how adorable their dog Nori is! And he treated everyone to drinks? What a gentlemen!
People are always looking for ways to get their guest on the dance floor. When the groom is the DJ, getting people to dance is not a problem! As the producer and DJ [yaku], it was so fun to get to see Jonathan celebrate with his talent and skill. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more full dance floor!
Edible Arrangements
The last detail I want to be sure to talk about from Jonathan and Deanna’s day was the table styling! In addition to blooms, they really wanted fruit and veg incorporated into their centerpieces. We had opted to do a mix of centerpieces and bud vases for the tables, so the fruit really tied everything together!
kind words
“Working with Berry Blooms was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding! Not only did she understand our vision, but she elevated it with her own ideas and artistry too. She was flexible and easy to work with, and we always looked forward to seeing the latest designs.
On our wedding day, Tori and her team executed everything flawlessly. We got so many compliments from our guests and a few enjoyed eating the fruits that were part of the centerpieces. We wished we had more time to admire every single arrangement during our busy day.
I can’t recommend Berry Blooms highly enough, not only for the florals but for how Tori brings warmth, expertise, and peace of mind to what can be a stressful planning process.”
