dance the night away
Make your wedding YOURS
Elena and Israel planned their wedding around wanting to have a dance party with friends. Exactly 11 years from when they started dating they did just that. They picked a great blank-slate venue with abundant space for an open air dance floor under the summer stars. When they inquired with me about their florals, they wanted two things: color and a big hanging disco ball!
So many of the details from their day were pure reflections of their relationship. From paletas for dessert to arriving in vintage low riders, you could feel the fun and thoughtfulness put into planning this day. I think my favorite detail had to be the confetti streamer they gave their guest to toss on their way back down the aisle! They (coincidentally) mirrored the multiple ribbons Elena picked for her bouquet perfectly!
Floating in Color
Okay okay, let’s talk about the star of the show that got you to read this blog post in the first place: the install.
Elena and Israle wanted a statement hanging installation inspired by disco balls and carnation garlands. The biggest challenge? Their amazing blank-slate venue didn’t allow for on-site floral work! So here’s my side note, one of the biggest pieces of advice I can offer nearly-weds: read your contracts, know what your venue requires of your other vendors. Especially if a venue offers a level of “all-inclusive” services and you’re looking to hire outside vendors, its important to understand all the potential limitations or conflicts there might be. Most venues and vendors are willing to work together but it can be a major challenge!
Spoiler alert, we made it work! I negotiated with the venue on their policies until we came to something agreeable for all of us. One thing they would not budge on (understandably) was having anything affixed to their property. So how the heck were we going to get something floating above the dance floor? When I did a walk through of the venue, I knew if we could get a tall enough arch-like structure we could get florals and disco balls up in the air without a problem!
We used a large, heavy duty photo-backdrop stand and to help alleviate weight, we mixed in faux bougainvillea with babies breath so we only had to water tube the statement blooms. I loved how the contrasting textures of the bougainvillea and babies breath brought this whole thing together!
Film Forward!
If you haven’t figured it out by now, I love film photography. And surprise surprise, so do Elena and Israel! All the photos you see in this post were shot on film, whether it was by their photographer, or my own BTS shots. Although their Brittanee also shot digital, I think it’s so great that Elena and Israel chose to prioritize incorporating the timeless feel of film into their day.
Elena and Israel also had an old camcorder at their wedding. Passing it around to friends and family through out the day served as their wedding videography and guestbook with the sweetest home video feel. The clips I have seen on social from it really made me take notes for my own future wedding!
